When it comes to choosing clothes, there’s more to it than first meets the eye. Picture this. You’re scrolling through the latest trending styles, adding to bag, and getting excited for your next haul to arrive at your door. You open the box, throw it on, and discover that the ensemble that looked amazing on the model just doesn’t quite fall right on your figure. Sound familiar? We’ve been there too. The good news? It’s not you, it’s the clothes. Yes, really.
Every body is different, and to look and feel like your best self, it’s often best to work with your body shape rather than against it. Embracing your unique physique is empowering and although it can be confusing at first trying to figure out what that is, once you’ve cracked it, you’ve reached the next level of confident dressing.
So, we’ve decoded the lingo and debunked the myths to help you decipher your shape once and for all and navigate how to dress for your body type. You’re welcome.
The Inverted Triangle
The inverted triangle body shape is generally defined by broader shoulders and narrower hips. If you’re wondering how to dress an inverted triangle body shape, we’d suggest opting for styles that accentuate the bottom half to balance out your silhouette. A-line skirts, wide leg trousers and boyfriend jeans are great for this.
The Rectangle
As a general rule, if you wear the same size tops and bottoms, you’re likely to have a rectangle body shape. Characterised by a straight silhouette with fewer curves, a rectangle body shape suits almost any pair of pants, but mid rise jeans are probably best for highlighting your waist the most. If you want to create the illusion of more curves, try belted jackets or dresses and peplum tops.
The Triangle (AKA The Pear Shape)
The triangle or pear body shape usually has a wider lower half and narrower top. Want to know how to dress a pear shaped body? Try drawing attention to your upper half with strong prints or bright colours and opt for darker colours on the bottom.
The Hourglass
Hourglass figures have equally proportioned hips and shoulders, with a waist that is well defined. Think Marilyn Monroe. To dress an hourglass body, we love to accentuate the waist even more with wrap dresses, v neck tops and high waisted jeans.
The Apple
The apple body shape is defined by a larger upper body and smaller lower body. You can aim for a balanced look by opting for simple and well fitted tops and jackets. When shopping for jeans, we’d recommend those with a straight leg as they’ll highlight your legs and further define your waist.
